Most ordering mistakes on sprinkler heads come from mixing up two similar part numbers. Work through the fields in this order and the part number resolves itself.
1. Orientation and response type
Start with where the head sits and how fast it needs to operate. Orientation and response type narrow the catalogue faster than any other field.
- Pendent, upright, sidewall (horizontal or vertical), concealed or recessed
- Standard response vs quick response — driven by the hazard classification, not preference
- Dry pendent/dry sidewall where the head sits in an unheated space off a wet system
2. Temperature rating
The rating must suit the maximum ambient temperature at the head, not the room average. Ratings are colour-coded on the frame or link, which makes field verification quick.
- 135–155°F (57–68°C) ordinary — typical conditioned space
- 175–200°F (79–93°C) intermediate — near unit heaters, skylights, attics
- 286°F (141°C) high — mechanical rooms and process areas
3. K-factor and thread size
K-factor sets the discharge for a given pressure and must match the hydraulic calculation. Thread size has to match the fitting you are landing on — a correct K-factor with the wrong thread still fails the inspection.
- Common K-factors: 2.8, 4.2, 5.6, 8.0, 11.2, 14.0
- Common threads: 1/2 in NPT, 3/4 in NPT
4. Finish and escutcheon
Finish is aesthetic on paper and practical in the field: corrosive and wash-down areas need the right coating, and the escutcheon must be ordered as a matching pair with the head.
- Brass, chrome, white polyester, black, wax/lead coated for corrosive areas
- Order the escutcheon and cover plate in the same finish and the same order
5. Listings and approvals
Approvals are the part inspectors check first. The listing has to cover the application, not just the product family, so confirm the mark before submitting.
- UL / ULC listing for Canadian projects
- FM approval where the insurer requires it
- Keep the datasheet with the submittal package
6. Verify against the part number
Manufacturers encode orientation, K-factor, temperature and finish into the SKU. Read the part number back against your six fields before you order — if any field disagrees, the part number wins the argument and you re-check the spec.
